Update:

Completed work individually:

Another update! So during a free period, Chloe and I discussed on researching into costumes & makeup, music and props for our film as we are going to be filming super soon! Anyway, we decided to start making our props, researching into costumes & makeup and music.

Chloe:
Chloe will be researching into costumes & makeup. Because we didn't want an identical costume to Snow White's, we decided to change the costume a little with a modern look to it.
  • Hopefully Chloe will be able to find the clothes shown above on Ebay or down town as we don't want something too expensive as the clothes will be ripped up for filming.
  • Chloe will try and find clothes similar to the pictures shown above as this is the overall look we want on Snow White for our film.

Tayla:
Tayla will be researching into music and finding sound tracks that will fit into our genre and film opening. She will be responsible for writing to them for copyright issues etc.

  • The video above is just an example of a film soundtrack - we will NOT be using this for our film. For example, if we did want the soundtrack from above, Tayla will be emailing to ask for permission to use for our film.

Me:
I am responsible for props. I will be researching into different props that we will be using for our film - looking into the price, if it will be okay for filming etc.

  • I will see where I can purchase these items for our film
  • I will attempt to make a hazard sign for our film and fingers crossed it will turn out okay!

We finally found someone who will play Snow White for us! :D

Tumblr Questionnaire:

Work completed individually:

I decided to do a 'mini questionnaire' on tumblr as you are able to ask questions publicly. I was going to use Twitter but I forgot you're only allowed to type 140 characters for each post, so it would be kind of annoying creating a lot of posts for just a question. Anyway, here are some of the screenshots of I printscreened on my phone.

Second half of the print screen.

Another response I got on Tumblr via mail

I decided to use Tumblr as an alternative way for market research because the results would be less biased in comparison to doing a questionnaire on someone I know - my friends or family - as they could be just agreeing with what I am saying or what I want to do. In addition, asking on tumblr allows me to get a wide range of opinions, some people who answered my questionnaire are not even my followers, but just complete strangers who happen to come across my mini questionnaire when they searched for specific 'labels' that came under the labels I put in for the questionnaire.

1) Are you appealed to the synopsis?

This was the first question I asked in my questionnaire, I asked this as I wanted to know if the audience was appealed to the synopsis that I typed out at the beginning of the questionnaire. This question is important as this kind of defines whether or not our film would be 'successful' if it was produced.

Some responses I got - "well it all depends on the details because right now the plot is interesting, but just barely. try to make a disney connection for appeal." " yes" - These responses I got suggests to me that the plot is appealing to most people as the results I got from people all said "yes".

2) If this was released out in the cinema, would you go and watch it?

I decided to ask this question as I wanted to know if people would be willing to pay to go and watch this at the cinema. This question is important as this determines whether or not our company would make money if this was a real life scenario.

Some responses I got - "yes I would" "probably, sounds like a thriller" - These responses suggests to me that most people will be willing to pay to watch this film at the cinema. Moreover, one of the responses included "..sounds like a thriller" this implies that people already recognise our film as a thriller film without us telling it is a thriller.

3) Would you watch this instead of going to the cinema?

I asked this question because I wanted to know how appealing our film was to people. I wanted to know if people would rather watch it online, and not go to the cinema to watch it. This question shows and suggests how appealing our film is.

Some responses I got - "maybe if it was good quality" "No" "No I would watch it at the cinema" - these responses were a mix, as some said they would watch it online if it was good quality, and some said they would rather watch it at the cinema. This suggests, some people do like our film and would pay to watch it at the cinema.

4) Do you think our film - The Black Apple - will ruin the image of Snow White for Disney fans?

I asked this question as I didn't want our film to ruin the image of Snow White for younger people, and I wanted people to think of  the film The Black Apple when Snow White pops into their minds.

Responses I got - "No but the audience has to be at least 13 and up" "yeah" "No, it will be a new interpretation, it wouldn't ruin it." The results I got were both negative and positive, one person said it will ruin the image of Snow White, and the rest of the others said it will not as it will be something new. These results suggests the film will not ruin the image of Snow White for people, but will be a new interpretation of it.

Advantages for using Tumblr for market research:
  1. Less biased as the people answering my questions are people I don't know (including some followers)
  2. Wide range of opinions - I'm not picking a specific group of people for my research i.e. our primary target audience - by putting it on Tumblr, anyone can answer it.
  3. Honest opinions - I'm not asking my friends or family, so the responses I get would be more reliable and honest as if my friends or family answered it, they'd answer it not as critical in contrast to asking people online.
Disadvantages for using Tumblr for market research:
  1. Not everyone will answer my questionnaire - some people might not be bothered to answer my questions, whereas if I had to ask face to face, they will likely to answer it.
  2. Hard to define a target audience or market - because I am asking online, I will get quite a wide range of answers, so it could be hard to alter some parts to the film to meets all the audiences needs.
  3. Answers may not be reliable - some answers could be not reliable as they could be just anyone answering my questionnaire just for fun.
Conclusion:

I think the questionnaire on Tumblr went well, as I got more responses than I expected to. The responses I got were helpful, they helped me to know what I could do to improve e.g. "try to make a Disney connection". In addition, the results also showed me where our strengths were in the film e.g. "the plot is interesting".

However, I could have asked a few more questions on the questionnaire to help me get a better understanding of the audiences needs. For e.g. I could have asked them their age and gender - this will help me define who our audience is for our film. Moreover, I could have asked "What they didn't like about the plot" this will allow more critical responses and allow me alter some parts to the storyline.

In conclusion, I think research was carried out successfully, and in a way I was glad I didn't ask additional questions as then some people would not want to answer the questionnaire as they may not have enough time or they could be too lazy to answer the long questionnaire.

The Pitch:

Work completed individually:

Below is the pitch we have presented out together to our classmates and the teacher:

Our institution logo (shown in the presentation) is called 'On Air' productions. The colours we have chosen to use suggest danger, power and energy as the logo looks like solar flames and fire. As a group we have decided to name our film “The Black Apple”, we have named the film this as “Apple” is the main concept of our film – being inspired by the film Snow White. In addition, the “Black” represents evilness, death and applies the enigma code theory – questions the audience.

Summary of our film:

Set in a mystical village, the story retells the classic story of Snow White, but with a thrilling twist to it. The adventure unfolds as a young innocent girl gets overwhelmed in the temptation of a dark force, which in result leads her to her downfall. A mystery occurs, where she takes a bite into an apple that was a forbidden treasure and now she must pay the price, and so does everybody else…

Age Rating and audience appeal:

We have decided to rate our film a certificate 15 as the film includes some violence, imitable behaviour and little touch into the genre of horror.
Together, we have thought of our possible target audiences:
The primary audience would be: Thriller film fans as they will be the ones who will be appealed to first, they will be the group of people who would want to watch the film before any other people. Our secondary audience would be teenagers or Disney teenage fans as Snow White was one of the most popular childhood Disney movies and the secondary audience would want to watch it.

First two minutes of the film:
(Will be shown in the powerpoint - the powerpoint wasn't too detailed as it was quite rushed since we decided on to use a powerpoint whilst pesenting our pitch the day before, and we didn't want to just put chunks of text into the powerpoint as it would have been difficult for the audience to read everything in a short space of time.)

Target Audience:

Work completed individually:

We have been discussing who our possible target audiences could be, and we have decided to carry out primary researches in order to help us appeal to our target audience. I will be carrying our a research through social network sites, Chloe will carry out an online survey and Tayla will be carrying out a questionnaire.

Who are our target audience?

Primary target audience: Thriller fans - the codes and conventions of our film will be appealing and eye-catchign to Thriller fans.

Secondary target audience: Teenagers that are 15 and above as the age certificate is going to be 15 for our film as it contains some sort of violence, imitable behaviour and a little touch into the horror genre.

Action Plan - Week 4:

For this week, we will together as a group:
  • Plan an action plan for the next six weeks
  • Institution regulation
  • Pitch proposal - dued in on Wednesday, we will be planning this out together as a group.
And individually:
  • Plan our audience questionnaires - Tayla will be doing a written questionnaire, Chloe will be doing an online survey and I will be doing a social netowrking survey using either Twitter or Tumblr.

Choosing our location:

Work completed individually:

After discussing together as a group, we have decided to use the location 'Ashridge'.
The reasons for this is because:
  • Spacious - several options of different places to film at Ashridge
  • The area is deserted - isolated from other people, convey to audience Snow White is disconnected from the outside world
  • Safe - houses and parks nearby
  • Just a few occasional interuptions from people walking by
  • The colours in the surrounding are generally dark, which connotes to the audience mystery and death
However, there will be some risks and cons about Ashridge:
  • Ashridge is a 15-20 minute drive from Hemel, this may be inconvinient for us to get there.
  • It is getting dark early, so filming may not be as successful
  • People walking by may distrupt us
  • If the location is wet, this could be a hazard for us filming and for the actors.
Ways we will tackle the problems:
  • One of our parents will take us to Ashridge on a Saturday as it is the most suitable day/time for all of us
  • We can go and film at an earlier time, e.g. during the day, or before 4pm
  • We can find a possible spot at Ashridge, where we will be less disturbed by people walking by
  • We could check the weather forecast before, so this will give us an idea on how the weather conditions will be like for filming
